9 things you should do to have Healthy eyes

The importance of a healthy eyes can not be overemphasized as the eyes, asides being an important organ in the body, is a sense organ for sight without which, we would stumble and fall, and also holds great value in aesthetics. In summary, it can be said that the eyes are a window to the body.

Needless to say, in our society, the value of people (economical, social & otherwise) starts dropping once they start developing eye defects. The rate of employment or marriage of people with visual defects is very low.

Hence, it is essential to maintain this very important part of the body.

Ways of Maintaining a Healthy Eyes

Regular exercises

Always be active, regular exercises can delay the onset of some age related diseases and help keep your eyes healthy.

Schedule eye exam occasionally

A comprehensive examination of the eye can help detect serious medical conditions such as diabetes, even before you know they exist.

Wear sunglasses

Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays, which can be dangerous and cause potential harm to your eyes. These UV rays have been known to cause a number of common conditions in the eyes like cataracts, pterygium, etc.

Rest your eyes

You should try to rest your eyes as least once in every 20 minutes for 20 seconds while on your cell phone, tablet or computer, to help prevent eye strain.

Eat fruits & vegetables

A diet rich in fruits, leafy vegetables & omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce your risk of various eye conditions e.g glaucoma etc, and improve your eyesight.

If you smoke, quit

Smoking increases your risks of cataracts and sight threatening eye diseases. Also, in those with allergic conjunctivitis, smoking can predispose you to recurrent attacks.

Wear safety googles

According to statistics, an estimated 2.4 million eye injuries occurs every year in the US, probably more in Nigeria & 90% of these can be avoided with protective eyewear.

Wear correctional lenses

If you have been diagnosed to have any problems with your eyesight due to a refractive error (long sightedness or short sightedness) and you have been prescribed a corrective lens, please, try as much as possible to get them and wear them. This can help you have a healthy eyes and prevent future problems.

Drink lots of water

Without enough water, you can’t produce enough tears to keep your eye moist and nourished, and also clean dirts.
