Covid-19: Doctors Refusing to See Patients

Since the onset of the Coronavirus disease outbreak in Nigeria, there has been a total of 214 confirmed cases, and 4 confirmed deaths with 25 persons recovered from the disease, having tested Negative twice.

Part of those who have been affected by the virus includes top politicians, doctors, nurses, security personnels and other persons. This has brought so much fear to every Nigerian, especially with the news of the date rate from the disease in major European nations, and most persons are now taking precautions.

According to Prof. Babatunde Lawal Salako, Professor of Medicine, UI and Director General Nigerian Institute of Medical Research , Yaba Lagos, a number of doctors have gone overly protective to the extent of not seeing their patients.

Prof. Salako’s NIMR has been one of the agencies assisting the NCDC on testing of suspected cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria, in order to reduce the burden on the Center. With his Experience since the beginning of the Drive Through testing in NIMR so far, he revealed that; some doctors are refusing to even assess their patients once their complaints are about upper respiratory tract. Such patients have often been sent to go and get COVID-19 test done.

“In some of the cases the results were negative. Patient probably has other medical issues which if not treated on time may lead to complications or death.”

Prof. Salako advises that all Physicians should please review their patients before panicking to send them for COVID-19 test. its time for call to duty.”
