Nigeria has confirmed a total of 214 cases of Coronavirus disease since the onset of the 2020 outbreak, according to the NCDC on the 4th of April 2020, with 25 recovered persons and 4 registered deaths from Covid-19. Follow the story here.
Latest reports from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Edo State, Nigeria alleges that on the 4th of April, 2020, 3 persons suspected to have Coronavirus disease after showing Covid-19 related symptoms all came back positive, and one of these persons died.
According to the reports, the 3 persons were admitted through the Accident and Emergency Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, about 4 days ago with Complaints of cough, catarrh and difficulty in breathing. Their histories were taken within hospital protocols and guidelines. However, all 3 persons denied having travel history outside Nigeria in the last 1 month or contact with anyone who has (according to the NCDC criteria).
Tests for Covid-19 were done for them which all came back negative, after which they were moved to the open ward which contains several other patients, as well as doctors, nurses, cleaners, and health workers.
However, 24 hours later, the condition of one of the patients deteriorated rapidly, which raised the suspicion for Covid-19, hence, prompting a repetition of the test for all of them after 72hours- it came back POSITIVE.
Few hours later, one of the patients died. It was reported that the deceased person also has some renal Co-morbidities.
Currently, about 25 medical doctors (13 house officers) of the hospital have gone into isolation. Our prayers are with them.
