Painful Sexual Intercourse: Causes, Treatment
A number of women have made complaints of having pain whenever they try to have sex. This pain can be mild or very severe & in most cases, has prevented them from engaging in any form of Sexual intercourse. This painful sexual intercourse is known medically as dyspareunia.

What is Dyspareunia
It is a medical condition where one feels pain during or after sex. This pain can be superficial or deep.
It is superficial if the pain is only felt around the vagina.
It is deep if the pain is also felt around your hip or waist region.
What causes Painful Sex
The causes of this dyspareunia most times is not know, but a few conditions have been known to give rise to it such as;
- Female Genital mutilation: this involves cutting away of parts of the female genitals & stitching them, especially in young girls to prevent them from having sex. It is a very terrible act which results in a lot of pains, scars & mental problems. Sadly, it still occurs in some parts of Nigeria till date.
- Infections: Diseases in the genitals such as ulcers, Sexually Transmitted Infections, swellings, ectopic pregnancy, unhealed wounds, etc can cause pain.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): due to inflammation (swelling) that occurred, some women can have pains during intercourse.
- Endometriosis: this is a condition where womb tissues are found outside the womb. It can cause painful intercourse among other things.
- Menopause: menopause usually comes with a lot of changes to the body of a woman. Some of them during or around menopause experience pain during intercourse. They can assist this with lubrication such as KY jelly.
- Emotional or Pyschological: one can feel pain during intercourse as a result of force or injury sustained through rape.
- Others are: Lack of relaxation, Lack of lubrication.
Treatment for Painful Intercourse
This depends on the cause. Anyone having this symptom should see a doctor immediately. Some investigations would be carried out & the cause identified. Then treatment can commence.

Thanks for explaining that painful sexual intercourse can also be due to emotional causes. I’d like to know more about how to find a good treatment for that because my husband and I haven’t been doing well in bed lately. I want to start working on improving out sex life moving foward.
