12 Tips on Menstrual Hygiene for Young Girls

Millions of girls are ashamed of their period. Menstrual Hygiene is very important. They do not have social support, access to supplies/materials/ facilities. We also support that the cost of menstrual pads should be reduced by the government, if not made free. This is because Girls do not choose to menstruate. It is a natural occurrence regardless of if they want to or not.

Many girls miss 1 to 2 months of school to menstruate. Many women loose working hours & income due to menses. Girls/women still see their PERIOD in PANDEMIC & the challenges are still there.

  1. Reduce VAT/cost of sanitary material
  2. Provide facilities for dignified menstruation in schools
  3. Provide women with the support they need to menstruate safely at work
  4. De-stigmatise periods by letting both girls & boys know more about it
  5. Teach girls even before they start on Menstrual Hygiene.

Menstrual Hygiene Tips

 

  1. Take a bath in the morning & evening
  2. Wear neat & dry cotton underwear
  3. Wash with warm water
  4. Don’t use vaginal wash
  5. Wash from front to back
  6. Change your sanitary napkin often
  7. If using cloths, don’t use for more than 3months.
  8. Trim, not shave hair around the vulva.
  9. Use only one method of sanitation.
  10. Discard used sanitary napkins properly
  11. Wash hands before & after change.
  12. Carry 1 or 2 extra pads on you, period can show up like a GUEST

On cloth materials: Not everyone can afford to purchase sanitary pads. This is why there is need for government intervention to make sanitary pads cheaper if not free. This is because girls do not chose if to menstruate or not. It is something that they must do by virtue of being a female.
Hence, Some people use cloth materials to make pads that they use. Its reusable but should be changed every 3 months to prevent infections.

Other important tips during your Menstrual period includes;

 

  • Exercise: this is important both during & after the period.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water during your period. It helps the body replace the volume of blood loss.
  • Up your iron intake as well as leafy green vegetables: helps in the production of red blood cells.
  • Avoid caffeine (coffee, soda)
  • Get your sleep, at least 7hrs of sleep.
  • Use pain killers as prescribed if having menstrual cramps.
